A recent study found that men and women who had bariatric surgery experienced a much higher rate of suicide during the years after the surgery than the average person.

This weight loss method, which adjusts digestion and limits food intake, is typically considered an option for severely obese individuals who haven't had success with dieting and exercise alone.

Over the course of 10 years, researchers followed more than 16,500 Pennsylvanians who had the surgery, and results showed a suicide rate of almost 14 out of 10,000 men each year and five out of every 10,000 women each year.

Comparatively, the suicide rates for every 10,000 people in the state were 2.5 for men and only 0.6 for women.

AOL Health has the complete story and thoughts from Dr. Christos Ballas, a psychiatrist at the University of Pennsylvania.
If you're struggling to quit smoking and looking for other ways to be healthy, new research has found that a diet high in a variety of fruits and veggies could reduce your risk for lung cancer.

Though the authors did say that the best way to reduce your risk of cancer is to kick your tobacco habit for good, adding more of these foods -- and different varities -- could have similar, though less significant, benefits.

"It makes sense to assume that it is important that you not only eat the recommended amounts but also consume a rich mix," lead researcher Dr. H. Bas Bueno-de-Mesquita said in a statement.
We've long known that alcohol, whether beer, wine or liquor, is just empty calories, but did you know that it is also associated with a higher risk of breast cancer?

A recent study found that two forms of breast cancer were linked to a drinking habit of one or more glasses a day. However, the forms are not as prevalent as a more common type of breast cancer, which was not connected to alcohol consumption.

Researchers said the kind of alcohol the post-menopausal participants drank did not affect the results.
Scientists and health experts often debate the advantages of taking fish oil supplements, from how they affect the brains of the elderly to the evidence for if they lower blood pressure. While many studies have shown omega-3s numerous heart health benefits, researchers are still skeptical of fish oil's potential to fight depression.

But a recent study, published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, may have brought researchers one step closer to finding the link between these omega-3-rich capsules and beating the blues.

The study focused on patients diagnosed with at least moderate depression and found that those who did not also have an anxiety disorder reported a decrease in their depression symptoms.
We've all heard many reasons why red wine has some health-improving benefits, from its high antioxidant content to protecting the brain after a stroke. And now a new study reveals another potential positive for red wine drinkers: preventing blindness.

The ingredient in red wine known as resveratrol is responsible for sight preservation, and it can also be found in blueberries, peanuts and grapes. The results are most promising for those who suffer from blinding conditions like diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. The researchers also found that resveratrol can block angiogenesis, or the rapid formation of new blood vessels -- a key factor in some cancers and a syndrome which affects the arterial blood vessels.
We all know an unhealthy diet filled with fructose, sucrose and trans fat can lead to obesity, but a new study finds it may impact your liver as well.

In the study published in the journal Hepatology, researchers from Cincinnati used a mouse model of obesity and liver disease that closely resembled these diseases in humans. After feeding the mice trans fat solids and fructose and sucrose-enhanced water, the researchers found that the mice developed fatty liver disease and showed signs of increased oxidative stress in the liver.
Learning which foods may cut your cancer risk is a hot area of research, especially when a large study found a food can potentially lower your risk by 50 percent. According to a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, vitamin B6 and the amino acid methionine can do just that for lung cancer.

The study involved 520,000 Europeans, including those who developed lung cancer by 2006 and those who hadn't. Though researchers are unsure of the amount of B6 and methionine needed to have these effects, one New York City doctor, Dr. Len Horovitz, has already begun telling his patients to increase their B6 intake, which can be found in supplement form.

Besides adopting a daily brushing and flossing routine, avoiding other seemingly-harmless habits can keep your teeth healthy.

Popular habits like drinking white wine, brushing teeth in horizontal strokes and chewing gum excessively can lead to destroyed tooth enamel or may even cause jaw problems. And suspending these common routines can help keep your smile bright.

"Most people take the health of their teeth for granted," Marc Leichtung, a dentist at Manhattan Dental Arts, told AOL Health. "There are many habits that may unknowingly affect oral health."
Most of us trust our doctors with any information they provide, including children's medicine advice and how to keep an infant healthy. But, according to a new study conducted by more than 5,000 board-certified American pediatricians, there are several medical myths even some doctors believe.

In fact, about 76 percent of children's doctors believe one or more of the "dangerous dozen" health myths -- many of which are based on old wives' tales. From putting a baby to sleep on his or her side to the best way to stop a nose bleed, these myths can prove dangerous when handled incorrectly.
Hearing a doctor diagnose you or a loved one with cancer can set off an array of emotions and concerns. From the initial shock of the news to deciding on the best treatments, it can be difficult to maneuver through the numerous cancer obstacles.

AOL Health's physical medicine and rehabilitation expert Dr. Julie Silver knows about the many personal and family crises that accompany cancer as she was diagnosed with breast cancer in her thirties. She has also worked with cancer patients who turn to her for advice and guidance on what to do after the initial diagnosis. So, Silver created a type of pre-plan for cancer patients, explaining what to do even before deciding on the best treatment to pursue.

Over the years she has learned that tactics like keeping a log of important contact information, cutting back on alcohol and seeking emotional support from family and friends will help those diagnosed with a serious illness get through the first stages.

That's Fit writer Ashley Neglia weighs in on whether Urban Outfitter's new "Eat Less" T-shirt is funny and clever, or offensive and promoting life-threatening eating disorders.

First there was "Voting Is For Old People." Then there was "Obama/Black." Now, the latest Urban Outfitters T-shirt to incite rage from the blogosphere comes as a drab soft knit tee marketed to women and scrawled with the words "Eat Less."

In an attempt to preemptively assuage critics, the T-shirt's description reads: "Eat less or more or however much you'd like in this seriously soft knit tee cut long and topped with a V-neck." Gee, thanks for the permission. However, it seems that this half-hearted effort fell on deaf ears, and as of Friday morning, the T-shirt has been pulled from UrbanOutfitters.com.

Whether it's a Christmas tree ornament called the "Glittering Gun" or a T-shirt reading "Fathers It's Up To You To Preserve Your Daughter's Virginity," Urban Outfitters has never been one to shy away from the politically incorrect. And, depending upon its audience, their products don't necessarily provoke the kind of backlash received by "Eat Less."

Infuriated bloggers call the shirt a blatant promotion for anorexia, suggesting that the company is encouraging eating disorders in its young female customers. While I'm not so sure it was Urban Outfitters's intention to be the Pied Piper for potential bulimics and anorexics alike, draping the shirt over a very thin model didn't do much to help its case.

While I'm all for irony and parody when well-executed, I vehemently disagree with one reader from "The Cleveland Leader," who wrote: "Considering that in the United States we have an epidemic of morbid obesity, I think the message is poignant and witty." It seems poignancy and wit are in the eye of the beholder.

Not only is the shirt's message devoid of humor and clever subtext, but it's either supporting or (worse) making fun of a serious, often life-threatening disease that affects millions of men and women -- some of whom are still young and impressionable enough to take this kind of insipid shirt to heart.

Tell us what you think. Are you offended by "Eat Less" or do you think it's being blown out of proportion?

But, not many have seemed as extreme as rapper 50 Cent's radical transformation for a new movie in which he plays an athlete battling cancer.

50, whose real name is Curtis Jackson III, went on a strict liquid diet for nine weeks -- leaving him 54 pounds lighter than his original 214-pound build. The actor looked very thin in pictures he posted on his Web site, so AOL Health spoke to several nutrition experts to get the scoop on the healthfulness of actor's rapid weight loss routines.

"How bad [rapid weight gain and loss] is depends on how much and how fast," Marion Nestle, New York University food studies professor, told AOL Health. "It can be lethal either way."
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved two new warnings for prescription weight-loss drug Xenical and over-the-counter pill Alli, making it clear to consumers that both drugs have had reports of severe liver injury.

The active ingredient that both drugs share, called orlistat, can cause liver damage. Symptoms include itching, yellow eyes or skin, dark urine, light-colored stools or loss of appetite. The FDA advises patients to stop taking either medicine and seek medical attention if they notice these symptoms.

Orlistat has been on the market for years, so why is the FDA issuing a warning now?

"The FDA said it reviewed 12 cases of severe liver damage in patients outside the United States who took Xenical, and one in a U.S. patient who took Alli," according to Reuters. "Two died and three needed liver transplants."

Because the liver injuries have been so severe, the labels of Xenical and Alli now have information about reported cases of severe liver damage. While the warning label on Alli will stress that these reports have been rare, the company claims it does want "people to have the information they need to choose the right weight loss aid for their situation," said Dr. Howard Marsh, chief medical officer for GSK Consumer Healthcare, the maker of Xenical and Alli.

According to the FDA, an estimated 40 million people worldwide having consumed Xenical or Alli.

This is the time of year when you need to break out the sunscreen -- whether you're running through the park or hitting the beach. With the numerous reports of the dangers of too much sun and too little protection, it's important to stock up on the best sunscreens. And thanks to Consumer Reports Health, who released a list of the top-rated lotions, sprays and creams, it may be easier for you to make an informed decision to avoid those nasty summer sunburns.

Consumer Reports Health tested how well 12 different sunscreens blocked both UVA and UVB rays and how well their sun protection factor (SPF) held up on those who were in the water. They also examined the sun-blockers' smell, feel and how well it rubbed in. With all these factors in mind, they found the top sun-protectors: Up & Up Sport Continuous SPF 30, Walgreens Sport Continuous SPF 50, Banana Boat Sport Performance Continuous SPF 30 and Aveeno Continuous Protection SPF 50.
Adding a little spice to your hamburgers can do more than just give them a kick. It can actually help to reduce their carcinogens, or substances that cause cancer, according to a new study.

Grilling, barbecuing, boiling or frying red meat produces carcinogens, known as heterocyclic amines or HCAs. Cooked beef often has higher levels of HCA than other types of meat, according to, J. Scott Smith, lead author of the study and a researcher at Kansas State University. Spices that contain antioxidants, like tumeric, rosemary and fingerroot, can help to lower these HCAs levels and may even block HCA formation when added during grilling.

What if your anesthesia wore off during surgery and you began to wake up and feel the surgeons cutting through your body? Though it's hard to imagine, it happened to Carol Weihrer 12 years ago.

To this day, Weihrer can recall hearing music and her doctor's voice as she awoke while having her right diseased eye removed. Although she didn't feel pain at first she saw the room go black when they cut her optic nerve and felt pain soon after they gave her a paralytic drug. "I thought I literally had to be flaming," Weihrer told AOL Health.

This phenomenon, called "anesthesia awareness," occurs in about one or two out of every 1,000 surgeries, according to the American Society of Anesthesiologists, and can lead to post traumatic stress disorder. Since Weihrer's experience she has spoken to audiences around the world and created the Anesthesia Awareness Campaign Inc. to increase the discussion on the risk factors.

Fibromyalgia affects about 2 percent of the population, with more women than men suffering from chronic pain and fatigue caused by the condition.

AOL Health spoke to Beck, 47, on her experience with the condition and how she manages its symptoms. "People don't understand what fibromyalgia is because there is no physically observable cause," she said.

But with the help of awareness campaigns like Know Fibro, for which Beck is a spokesperson, fibromyalgia sufferers can easily learn more about the condition and how to control their pain.

Aromatic Tomato and Vegetable Soup

Ingredients:
1 onion, diced
1.5 cloves of chopped garlic
Thyme, sage, and rosemary sprigs tied in a bundle
15 tomatoes peeled and chopped
1 ounce tomato paste
1 cup chopped carrots
1 cup chopped celery
1 spice bag filled with mustard seeds, cinnamon, and fennel seeds
1.5 quarts organic vegetable stock
