The Biggest Loser Families - November 11th episode

The Biggest Loser Families this week was a treasure chest of diet and nutrition advice sandwiched between soap opera cookie scenes devoid of any nourishing inspiration. Soap star Vicky continued her mean streak when she incessantly insulted Phil -- didn't you love it when Trainer Bob called her "maniacal" and the "biggest game player" ever? But onto the diet, nutrition and more motivational aspects of the show.

Bye-bye teams, we're back to singles with a twist -- eliminated contestants sauntered their thinner bods back to the ranch this week to compete in a challenge for one return spot. Fastest player scurrying up and down a single step 1,000 times was Heba's less-big guy, Ed. Suspense cranked up as Stacey nearly overtook him, delivering the show's first lesson -- Second Place can be just as good as First Place. You may not have the best physique in the gym, the lowest resting heart rate in the running club or the Proudest Warrior in yoga class, but fighting hard at your diet/nutrition best is a winning philosophy.

Try the Biggest Loser 4-3-2-1 Food Pyramid

There's more than one food pyramid out there. While the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) spends gazillions to advocate their MyPyramid, The Biggest Loser reality show touts their own -- the 4-3-2-1 Food Pyramid.

Weight loss and nutrition adviser for The Biggest Loser, Dr. Michael Dansinger, reveals the skinny on the 4-3-2-1 daily countdown:

  • At least four cups of fruits and vegetables
  • Three eight-ounce servings of lean protein
  • No more than two cups of whole grains
  • One sweet treat (e.g., diet pudding)

Add regular exercise to the 4-3-2-1 formula and you're bound to shed pounds. I regularly stick to the 4-3 part, but on those bad food days, my pyramid has a big 4-3-6-3 bulge -- not good. Is your pyramid top-heavy too often?

Biggest Loser at home - dangerous or not?

Is The Biggest Loser reality show dangerously grueling or a healthy grueling? Depends on which expert you ask. Considering the show's immense primetime popularity and the fact many might be trying their own demanding form of Biggest Loser at home, it's a question worth asking. Here are a few positions:

Dangerously Grueling

  • The show's extreme fitness demands could potentially mock serious health conditions related to morbid obesity, says one expert. Bootcamp-like Biggest Loser workouts put those with undiagnosed high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes at risk for a heart attack, stroke or low blood sugar.
  • High-intensity from the get-go stresses the joints to the max -- we've seen several contestants limping around.
  • Unless you're a trust-fund kid, most people have jobs that get in the way of burning calories Biggest Loser-style -- 4,000 a day for women, 6,000 for men. This stirs up unrealistic expectations at home.

It's a Healthy Grueling

  • Biggest Loser's Dr. Rob Huizenga emphatically believes in the power of intense, sustained exercise to counter morbid obesity. He says contestants are tremendously good at keeping the weight off compared to clinical studies of participants losing far less. As long as you have a doctor's approval and supervision (if necessary), go for it.
  • The show delivers inspiration to the masses -- even if you don't daily hit the gym Navy SEAL-style, viewers at home are learning diet and fitness tips, while simultaneously beginning to actually believe losing 100 pounds is possible.

So what's your opinion? Let us know in the poll below.

With a doctor's approval and supervision (if necessary), Biggest Loser at home is

Beyond teams holding their weight while suspended in mid-air, Week 7's The Biggest Loser Families was light on sweaty fitness and heavy in Blue Team reality TV strategy. At the open, Black 'n Blue played the calorie challenge This 'n That, appropriately led by a slim 'n trim co-author of Eat This, Not That! Blue was the best at guessing which dish had more calories -- here was one of the harder questions:

Which has more calories, This or That?

Both waistlines and teams continued to shrink this week as The Biggest Loser Families voted off Amy P., leaving her with a dark fridge and a disappointed husband alone at the ranch. The ugly side of strategy became especially apparent as Vicki's smug 'I'm safe in my alliance' attitude diluted her effort in challenges and earned her a tongue-lashing from Trainer Bob. At least this is how the producers edited the tape. From cool new challenges, including Black's day on a high ropes course, Blue's Cirque du Soleil-ish workout at the LA club Absolution, and a visit with a doctor to celebrate the immense health benefits of losing major weight in six weeks, contestants continue to prove it is possible to say goodbye to their morbidly obese lifestyle. Here are a few lessons from the show:

Face your fear and do it anyway -- I garnered insights from this book with a similar title years ago, and it was life-changing. We all feel fear, yet it's how we manage it that matters most. When Coleen faced her fear of heights and jumped off that high ropes ledge anyway, she set herself up for a transformational moment. I used to be a high ropes facilitator in my mid-20s, witnessing dozens of clients learn they do have the strength to attempt a difficult move, even when engulfed by spine-tingling, knee-shaking fear. Just as Coleen affirmed herself on the ledge with "I control my body," you can grab the wheel and U-turn toward a healthier lifestyle.

Biggest Loser Families: October 14th episode

The Biggest Loser Families continued this week with a two-hour episode featuring the longest challenge in the show's history -- climbing up and down a mountain from sunrise to sunset. Besides being all-day mountaineers, the game took a turning point as contestants were assigned individually to Blue (Trainer Bob) or Black (Trainer Jillian) teams by Heba. She walked into the captain's role by eating a couple glazed donuts in a pitch black room -- whoever ate the most calories was awarded power to choose the teams. Heba played a good strategy -- those donuts swamped Phil's two peanut butter cups and Amy's brownie for top spot, while the rest chose inaction, swallowing nothing.

To me, the best part of the game is watching the contestants drop the weight. Ater five weeks of intense workouts and stellar eating habits, you can't miss dramatic body changes. Player strategy is critical now, but mental and physical fortitude are two wild cards that can swing the game. Here are a few fitness and weight loss lessons from Week Five:

You don't have to be happy to work out hard and lose weight: A cohesive team is powerful, but Heba proved you can still lose weight even when relationships are dicey. Heba made enemies when she resentfully sent peanut-butter-cup-thief Phil to the Black team, but she still lost an amazing eight pounds anyway. Michelle, enmeshed in her parents' divorce, is lighter by seven pounds even with a heavy heart. She nearly fled the ranch, but good 'ole Jillian's been investing major psychological energy to keep her in the game.

Popular Savannah resident Ruby Gettinger is fun, fabulous, and beautiful. She also weighs 500 pounds, but that hasn't stopped her from living life to the fullest. Now she's the star of her own TV show. Ruby, premiering on the Style Network, chronicles Ruby's weight-loss journey after being told to slim down for health reasons.

According to the show's press release: "Even at her highest weight of 700 pounds, Ruby has never been afraid to go out - hanging out with friends, dancing or going to the movies - despite frequent disapproving stares and harsh comments by passersby. By sharing her positive and negative personal experiences and allowing viewers to come along on her weight-loss journey, Ruby hopes to help others realize that they are not alone and if she can do it, anyone can."

Tune in on November 9th at 8pm (7pm central) to the Style Network for Ruby's story. In the meantime, visit the official website for more info.

This week delivered a double dose of The Biggest Loser, filled with a giant tub full of water for a challenge to remember. Players had to stand and hold onto skinny bars in a vat of water for as long as possible, while the water slowly drained from their chest to their toes. I immediately put my money on a guy to win this one, they typically have stronger guns. But in reality, the test required balance, strength, tolerance for pain and mental fortitude -- Vicky scored a big win for the Brown team.

Here are the winning lessons offered in both high-emotion episodes:

This week started out with the announcement that the families would be heading on a road trip to the Grand Canyon. But you know what road trips mean: Unhealthy eating and little activity. Contestants did ok in the eating department, but with tough trainers Jillian and Bob not along for the ride, fitness fell off their list of priorities.

Here are some of the lessons learned from this episode:

Want to hear some not-so-surprising news? The average American exercises 20 minutes a day. More not-so-surprising news: The average American spends about four or more hours watching TV.

You've heard the fitness tips before. Exercising can be easy and fun. It can fit into any lifestyle and any routine. You can exercise while watching TV, or even just during the commercial breaks. Like many of you, my initial reaction is usually, "But watching TV is for relaxing, for sitting on the couch," and "Commercials are the perfect amount of time to grab a bag of popcorn."

So how do we move from the couch to the exercise mat? My trick is to stick in a DVD. No, not an exercise DVD, but movies that inspires me to get active.

Read on for my personal favorites for all occasions:

Goat testicles don't taste like eggs

I know. Isn't this a disgusting topic? Blech. How do I know this information you wonder? Well, a few days ago I had the luxury of speaking with one of the coolest men on television, Discovery Channel's Man vs. Wild star, Bear Grylls. Bear travels to the wildest locations around the world and teaches survival skills. So, just in case you get stranded in Antarctica some day......you'll know what to do.

Bear's complete interview will be featured in an upcoming Celebrity Fitzness Report here on ThatsFit.com, but in the interim I thought I'd share this fun information with you. A huge part of surviving in the wild is knowing what to eat and what not to eat. Bear discriminates against poisonous things, not disgusting things. Apparently neither should we.

This season he feasted on goat testicles. He was presented with them by some nomadic tribesman and contrary to Bear's initial projections, they did not taste like hard boiled eggs..................
